Some names and additional information submitted Bonnie Murphey Evans who read the cemetery on Jun 3, 2002. Jun 4, 1846 - Apr 28, 1864, son of James and Elizabeth Simpson Stewart, Joseph E. 1840 - 1908 Stewart, Miss Mary E. 1843 - 1916 Unknown Small vault, no inscription, numerous repairs evident Whitsett, James T. died May 11, 1857, aged 41 yrs 4 mos & 10 days This is all of the
intact stones present in the cemetery. On the other side of
the fence are numerous pieces of marble slabs, obviously
tombstones, and many old red bricks. Due to the weight of
the pieces, insects, and poison ivy, it was impossible for
me to move any but the smaller parts, but several long
narrow stones were intact, probably footstones, and I found
the following initials: JCC, BSC, GWC, NGB, WC, HB, JQC. It
seemed fairly easy to place these with the respective names
J.C. Carnathan, Benjamin Cannon, George W. Cannon, N.G.
Barksdale, William Cannon, Huldah Barksdale, and John Q.
Cannon, though, of course, this is uncertain. I could find
no evidence of inscriptions on a number of these pieces of
stones, but one large (about 40” x 36” at its longest
points) stone bore several lines of poetry, only a few words
of which were legible. - BM Evans |
